The setting of The Fault in Our Stars is your average everyday town. There are parks, schools, churches, and hospitals. The story is set in modern day. There is no real historical background except for the places they once went to as a child. The setting brings back some memories that the characters had when they were younger. With the city being pretty small it makes it easy for the characters to get to each other and all the places they tend to go are close together so it is easy for them to get to each other in case of an emergency. I believe that they live in a nice community and that it would easy to adapt to their environment. They live in a town that has everything you need and everyone gets along. Therefore, I think it would be very easy to adapt into their environment.

Anna, I agree with your post about the setting in the book. Although the setting would be easy to adapt to, Hazel does not seem to enjoy life because of her cancer. She is in and out of hospitals often and this environment effects how she acts. She is very depressed at the beginning of the story!

In The Fault in Our Stars I do not agree with all of the main character’s actions. Hazel is dating Augustus who just recently died from his cancer and she is very upset. Then, at his funeral Peter Van Houten shows up to tell Hazel the answers she has been wanting about her favorite book. Instead of accepting this and listening to Peter, she goes off on him for being rude to her when they were in Amsterdam. I do not think Hazel should have acted this way because Augustus would have wanted her to know what happens to her favorite characters. She is only acting like this because she’s having trouble dealing with her boyfriend dying. I wish Hazel would not have been so mean because she usually was very kind to people.

I havent read that part yet but i totally agree with you. Hazel shouldnt have acted that way even though someone close to her has died. Gus would have been really mad at her for not fufilling her dreams because of him. This wasnt his fault or her fault so she shouldnt be taking this oppurtunity for guranteed when this was her dream since she was little.

I am surprised to hear that Hazel reacted that way when throughout the book she talks about how badly she would like to know what happens to the characters. She is usually so kind, and I understand Peter wasn’t very kind when they visited, but he finally gave her the answers she’s been asking for. She shouldn’t have gone off on him.

I agree with that statement because Hazel didn’t restore the whole reason of going to Amsterdam in the first place. Therefore, Augustus’ used wish wasn’t of more value. This was also a poor decision made by Hazel because Peter Van Houtten was trying to gain closure. He knew how bad he treated Augustus and Hazel, and he wanted to make it up to Hazel by giving her the information that she wanted.

      Comment 1:
I understand this comment I too did not understand how Hazel could react this way when all she wanted throughout the whole book was to know what happened to Anna’s Family. I do understand that she was going through a tough time with Gus dying but I would think that she would be more thankful for Peter finally giving her the answers she had always wanted.

Hazel is like a “grenade” one minute she’s happy and the second she blows up. She hates what she has become and she knows it ruins her relationship status. I personally think she shouldn’t worry about that because she does have cancer and of course it will change her mood swings and life but its just a pebble down the road. You get up and keep trying to get through it you shouldn’t just drop everything just because of one problem. She told Gus that they should stop talking because one day she’s just going to explode and Gus was still willing to be by her side. I think Hazel should just realize how good of a guy she has. Gus is always willing to make her life better and she should appreciate instead of slowly letting go of him.

Peter Van Houtten’s actions were very immature and disrespectful. He treated Hazel and Augustus like they weren’t important. The character is acting this way partially because he’s drunk, but he also doesn’t realize how much of an influence he has been to Hazel and Augustus by writing the book. I think that it is wrong for him to treat Hazel and Augustus like nothing because they traveled all the way to Amsterdam to see him, and that was Augustus’ only wish that he saved. They were so committed to meeting him and reading his book. I would suggest that that he act kinder to the people that admire his work, even if he doesn’t have a liking to the person.

Faith, I completely agree with your post! Mr. Van Houten was such a jerk to Hazel and Gus when they came all the way to Amsterdam to meet him. I wish he didn’t act like that because I really wanted to know what happens to the characters in An Imperial Affliction, just like Hazel and Augustus.

I agree, he should not be so rude to two of his biggest fans who came all the way to find answers he told them he would give. He seemed kind in his letters to them. It wasn’t expected that their meeting with him didn’t smoothly. I would have thought he would have been very kind and given them the answers they had asked for.

I totally agree with you. The way Peter treated Hazel and Gus was no way to treat people who have been inspired by you. If someone was as inspired at as they were to Peter they would get my full attention and my great kindness. This was just all a waste of time and hopes. Peter will get what he deserved because that not any way you should treat people. And if acting like he was drunk is such and awesome way to greet people.

I agree with this because Hazel is too cautious. She is so worried about hurting people, that she isn’t even living her life to the fullest, she is living her life (possible last days) in fear. She should’ve had the mind of Augustus because he always viewed life as a beautiful thing, and he had no regrets about anything.

I disagree with Hazel’s personality towards life. I understand that Hazel is going through a rough time, but I still think she should try and have more fun during her life. Hazel knows she is dying so I do not see why she does not try and live each day as it is her last. Instead of enjoying the life she has left she just waits around as if she wants to die. I think that Hazel should go out and try all the things she wants to do before she dies rather than just staying at home and waiting until she dies.

I agree with you! If i had cancer i would live till the fullest untill the day comes that i die. I would want to experience everything before my times comes knowing i did at least one thing succesful and i had someone there to love me as much as Gus did to Hazel. If Hazel experienced more things like Amesterdam she would love her life evn though she had cancer.

I agree with this Hazel tries so hard to not hurt anyone around her but really her friends and family just want to help her. She will not let anyone into her because she knows that she is going to die and does not want to leave behind damage when she dies. This is also why she did not want to let Gus into her life.

A major conflict in A Fault in Our Stars is Hazel’s cancer. Her cancer isn’t curable; it is something she has to live with until it kills her. Her knowledge of her soon to be death keeps her life normal, or as normal as she can get. She spends so much time in hospitals and support group; she was home schooled and now attending college. All of this at just sixteen years old. She also is afraid of letting people in, she doesn’t want to hurt anymore people then she has to when she dies. I am not surprised by how she live considering she has cancer, but it is depressing how she doesn’t get the chance to be a care-free sixteen year old like the rest of the teenagers out there.

      Alley,
I agree with everything you said! It’s awful that a sixteen year old has to deal with that when she hasn’t gotten to enjoy being a teenager. I don’t know how I could ever be in her position. This conflict is what the whole book revolves around. She has trouble leading a normal life because of the cancer. I feel bad for all the trouble Hazel goes through.

I agree, Alley. The things that Hazel goes through are too much for a sixteen year old. I feel like since she goes through so much, she doesn’t want other people to be around a busy teenager with sickness. The fact that she has to shut the world out is sad.

One of the most important conflicts in this story would be how Hazel and Gus went all the way to Amsterdam to see their favorite author who was going to tell them what happens in her favorite book. They all make it and meet him and the author said he would tell them but once they meet face to face he doesn’t tell them. There whole trip was based on what was going to happen and he just let them down like that. This is important to the plot because it effects the way Gus talks to Peter Van Houten the author about how much he loves Hazel and Gus wants to make her love life like a magical story. I think it was very wrong of Peter to do that and it surprised me in a way that he just crushed them like that. I Reacted this way because they spent so much time and money on this trip to come back with a loss of hopes.

Diana, I agree. They talked so much about finally finding the answers to the questions they have been asking about the book, and they went through a lot to make this trip happen. After finally getting the doctor’s approval and the make a wish foundations help they show up just to get let down by Peter. I also think Gus should not have reacted the way he did.

I agree this was a major conflict in the story! If this didn’t happen Gus may have never wrote those letters to Peter about the way he loved Hazel and then she might have never got that last letter after he died. She needed hat last letter from Gus to understand the way he felt about her when he was alive.

I completely agree with this conflict. I could not believe that Peter did not tell them what they came to hear. The point behind the trip was going to find out what happened to Anna’s family after she died. I was so disappointed that they spent all this time waiting for answers and still did not get to find out what they wanted to know this whole time.

The most important conflict in The Fault in Our Stars is the conflict of both of the characters having cancer. At the beginning only Hazel has cancer, but later Gus’ cancer comes back and he gets even worse than Hazel. This conflict affects the plot because the reader does not see this coming. You think that Hazel might die, but in the end it all changes. The healthy boy that Hazel fell in love with turns very sick and ends up dying. My reaction to this conflict is that I was very surprised and did not see this coming. I reacted this way because they make it seem like Hazel will die at some point in the book because she thinks about what will happen when she dies. This conflict was very upsetting but it is very important to the plot of the story.

I agree Mallory, this plot is upsetting. I most definitely did not see that coming. The author did a very good job of hiding the big tragedy of August’s death. He kept readers thinking that Hazel would be the character that dies. I love it, though, because it makes me feel like I’m a part of the book in some way.

    2. Mallory, I agree that this conflict is very surprising and upsetting. No one would have ever guessed that Gus would get so sick again. You focused on Hazel’s cancer and chances of dying, and never though that Gus would relapse. It is a huge change in plot and a big conflict between the characters.

I agree with your statement. I think it was very surprising to hear that Gus’s cancer had come back. I did not expect this because it never even talked about Gus having cancer again until it was so far along. I was shocked because the whole book made you think that Hazel was sicker than Gus but it turns out that Gus ended up dying before Hazel.

The most important conflict of the story is the fact that Hazel has cancer and she is frightened that she will hurt everyone that she loves and/loves her. Instead of her dying, Augustus Waters dies instead. I think that it is important to the plot because it adds suspense to the story. It also makes the reader feel different emotions. My reaction to the conflict is flabbergasted because I expected Hazel to die, and I had no doubt in my mind that Augustus was going to live. This book is very different from the other books because the sweetest, most heartfelt character of the story gets the tragic part of the plot, I’m pretty sure that that’s why people love the book so much. This book made me really think about life and how I should be like Augustus, and appreciate my life as much as I can.

The most important conflict in The Fault in Our Stars is the fact that hazel has a terminal illness which is cancer and how she thinks of herself as a grenade because of her illness. This was a conflict that affected the plot a lot especially with the way Hazel viewed herself. She felt as if she wasn’t worthy enough to be in love. Ever since Hazel was diagnosed she has lived a very sheltered life mostly reading books in her room and not being very social. My reaction towards this conflict was surprised because I feel that everybody no matter what deserves love.

One important conflict in The Fault in Our Stars is that Hazel and Gus are both battling cancer. I think this is an important conflict in this book because it affects how they have to live their lives and what they have to go through on a daily basis. If Gus and Hazel did not have cancer they would have never meet. The conflict in this book had to happen or there would not have been a story. When I found this out about Hazel and Gus I was very upset because I knew how hard it would be for them to deal with their disease. I reacted this way because I do not want anyone to have to go through what they are going through.

The Fault In Our Stars theme is that anything is possible. That cancer cant stop you from having fun and finding your true soul mate. Hazel obviously had cancer and she thought it was the end of the world until she found Gus who opened up her eyes into believing that there was still a purpose for her existence on earth. I find this meaningful because Gus gave Hazel hope and made her fall in love with an amazing guy and that just doesn’t come around to often. Hazel got lucky in finding Gus. “Late in the winter of my seventeenth year, my mother decided I was depressed, presumably because I rarely left the house, spent quite a lot of time in my bed, read the same book over and over. Ate infrequently, and devoted quite a bit of my abundant free time thinking about death.” Before Gus Hazel pretty much thought to herself whats the point of life if shes sick. “You gave me forever within a numbered days; and im grateful.” Once she met Gus her love for him is what helped her from always being depressed. Having cancer is what helped her into meeting Gus and she couldn’t be anymore grateful for that.

Diana you are right because in the book anything is possible! Hazel and Augustus mean so much to each other and together they can do anything. You can tell they know each other really well because even after he died, Hazel still thought about what Gus would’ve said about the Facebook posts on his profile about his death. It’s amazing how close two people can get in a short amount of time.

I agree Diana, this theme is very special as well. Although, Hazel didn’t have too much hope in finding love and being a normal teenager, Augustus gave his all to convince her that life isn’t as bad as you make it. Because of him, she started having hope. If she hadn’t met him, she wouldn’t be as happy as she was.

The theme for The Fault in Our Stars is to appreciate life every day because you never know when you’ll take your last breath. It’s important to the book because it gives Augustus the characteristic of positivity, and that makes readers feel attached to him. That also makes his death more significant in the book. This is meaningful to me because it reminds me of the things I take for granted each day. It also makes me think of how I can improve my day to make it the best one possible. In the book, it states “Without pain, how could we feel joy?” This quote is special because it shows how you have to appreciate even the hard things in life. Another quote from the book is when Hazel thinks in her mind “But, Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I’m grateful.” This quote is also special because it shows how grateful Hazel is to have Augustus in her life, and that she got the time to be with him.

This is a great theme for the book! I love the saying, “without pain, how could we know joy?” because in the book Gus and Hazel both like that quote and it is a true statement. We wouldn’t know happiness because there would be no sadness. I also agree that Hazel and Augustus meant a lot to each other. They knew everything about each other and were best friends!

In The Fault in Our Stars there are any themes but the most important one is that even if you only know someone for a short time, they can impact your life in any ways. This is meaningful because Hazel and Augustus get to know each other very well in just a little amount of time. When she first meets him she is kind of depressed because of her cancer and she doesn’t have many friends. He turns her whole world around and she falls in love with him. He loves her very much too. Then, sadly, Gus’ cancer comes back. He dies quickly and Hazel is left with the impact he left on her life. She got to experience love with him, and he was her best friend. He taught her so much and got her out of her depression easily. At Augustus’ pre- funeral Hazel tells him how much he means to her and says, “You gave me forever within a numbered days, and I’m grateful.” She tells him his because she wants him to know before he dies that he is special and that she loves him. She affected his life too. When Hazel finally finds and reads the letter hat Gus sent to Peter Van Houten, Augustus wrote “I wanted more time so we could fall in love. I got my wish. I left my scar.” Gus means that he fell in love with Hazel in this little amount of time and that he knows he impacted her life. This theme is very meaningful to The Fault in Our Stars.

You couldnt have said this any better. Being depressed and making it stop you from living life to its fullest is sad and not right. Hazel needed to open her eyes up and realize that there is a purpose to life and not have cancer effect that. Meeting Gus made her whole perspective on life change and made her develop into a much happier and better person. Cancer is what helped her with that and she shouldnt take it for granted.

I agree Mallory, this theme is important. It is important to appreciate the people you spend time with. Taking things for granted is a bad habit nowadays, and people need to understand the meaning of being with people who make you happy. The way Augustus left an impact on Hazel’s life will be unforgettable because they had a special bond, and they stuck by each other till the end.

The Fault in Our stars theme is no matter how big your struggles in life are there are people that will help you make it through. Hazel with her cancer was depressed until she met Gus. He began to get her out of the house, take her to do things, help her live a little better. “Now I’m not going to give you my wish or anything. But I also have an interest in meeting Peter Van Houten, and it wouldn’t make sense to meet him without the girl who introduced me to his book.” He made her happier to be alive. Without him she probably would still have been dreading the day she dies. Gus changed things for her. He made it possible for her think about things other than death. “As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.” He made her fell as if he gave her a life time of joy.

I think that The Fault in Our Stars’ theme was that you should not let anything get in the way of you living your life. In the book both Hazel and Gus have cancer so they understand that each day is special and you never know which could be your last. They both try and make the best of bad situations. However did not always have this kind of attitude. In the beginning of the book Hazel had a sour attitude towards life and never wanted to do anything, but when she met Augustus her personality changed and she started living life to the fullest. She realized that life was short and they started having more fun. Augustus and Hazel even took a once in a lifetime trip to Amsterdam even though neither one of them was in a good condition for traveling.
