The setting effects the character’s thoughts and feeling because she took a job in California and knows no one and barely knows English. Hannah is from Moldova, a small poor town near Russia where there is no opportunities. She took a job as a nanny for a family who is wealthy. They speak Russian so it makes her feel a little more at home. She took this job as a nanny hoping to save up enough money to put herself through med school and become a doctor. She is constantly thinking about everything that could go wrong. Hannah was scared in the airport because she has fake documents and was afraid they would catch her and send her back to where she came from.

The book trafficked takes place in Moldova then California. The setting affects the characters thoughts and actions because it is her first time in the U.S and she barely even knows how to speak English. She went to California for a job as a nanny and is acting strange because she is nervous since people have warned her of trafficking in the U.S and she’s worried that she won’t be with a good family. She feels out of place socially because she has never been in the U.S and is used to a life in poverty so when she moves in with a rich family everything is very different to her. Since she is nervous about moving in with the family she lies to them and says she doesn’t have any of her documents and hides them, this is unlike the character but the setting and time period are affecting her decisions. I’m sure it is hard for her to adapt to the American lifestyle just like it would be hard for me to adapt to the Moldavian lifestyle. As a response I would suggest that she tries her best to fit in and take classes to better her understanding of English.

The book takes place in California where the character moved from Moldova to there to be a nanny in a Russian family. The setting is described as a relatively big house with dark lighting, and that really sets the mood for the story and makes the character suspicious from the start.her thoughts are pretty much to be cautious and not to entirely trust this family at first because they seem kinda sketchy. i think she should not trust them because of how they have treated her in the environment so far and maybe learn better English since she is in america and may need it for help.

The setting of this book is Hollywood, California. The time isn't specified, however it is this generation. The setting doesn’t seem special, but it affects the story completely because Hanna, the main character, is from Moldova and speaks Russian. She is forced to lie in order to protect herself, even though she hates lying and is very honest. She’s also very confused that the family is doing very suspicious things, like keeping her in a garage, keeping her from learning English, and searching everything. My reaction to this situation would be running away. Between the strip searching, mysterious man, and being forced to sleep in a garage is was too far, and it’d be safer to take the risk alone.

    1. You would run away even though you dint know anyone, know your way around, and barely know English? Wouldn't you be afraid that something even worst would happen to you? I see where your coming from though because your scared and you feel like you have to watch your back every second .

I agree that her they should not be going through her personal belongings and they shouldn’t make her sleep in the garage when they have many extra rooms that she could sleep in. but I don’t think that running away is the best option because she has no money, knows very little English, and wouldn't know where to go. I think she should wait until she gets some money and knows her way around a little bit and then she should run away.

yea she shouldnt be taking most of the stuff going on. Like not being paid, treated unfairly, not being able to take classes, ect...
if she escaped she could go to the cops but theyll probably deport her. Thenaybe someday she can try america again in a different way.

I don’t agree with the actions of the mother in the new family, Lillian. She wasn’t very welcoming, doesn’t trust Hannah, and thinks she is a liar. On the very first day, Lillian yelled at Hannah for giving the daughter, Maggie an ice cream bar before dinner and then throwing it away. She made a huge scene and ended up throwing them away anyway. Lillian forced Hannah to undress in front of her and went through her suitcase because she thought she was lying about having her documents and airplane ticket. I think Lillian should go easy on her because this is her first time in America and doesn’t know how people act and what is normal and what isn’t.

I agree with your post because I also think that Lillian should go easy on Hannah because it is her first time in America and she is not used to the lifestyle in which they live. I also think that Lillian should trust Hannah more because she doesn't have a good reason not to trust her.

I agree Lillian is a little crazy. She's getting way too personal and breaking a few laws by going through her things and stripping her down. She also blew the whole ice cream thing way out of proportion, that really shouldn't have been an ordeal.

I disagree with the actions of Hannah’s new boss, Lillian. Before Hannah went to California she talked to an agent about the job and they said that she would get paid $400 a week and that her plane ticket and documents had been paid for. Hannah has been working for a couple months now and has not received any pay because Lillian said that she had to pay them back for her plane ticket and documents. Also they said they could only give her $400 a month if that. If I were Lillian I would pay Hannah and give her a reasonable amount considering the amount of work she does. Hannah also wants to enroll in English classes for free and Lillian won’t let her even though they don’t cost anything.

I agree with you, i think lillian is being very unfair with hannah. Especially sense shes been cooperative with pretty much everything asked of her. She should really keep asking for the money and if not then leave. I dont know why hannah does most of the stuff shes asked its way over board.

I agree with your post because Hannah deserves at least something for all of the work she’s been doing. Lillian doesn’t even show appreciation when Hannah is actually doing her a favor. I think Lillian lied to Hannah about not getting paid because she had to pay back for the plane ticket because it’s obvious that they dint have money issues. They shouldn’t make promises they cant keep.

i don't agree with the actions of Hannah in the book for a lot of reasons. Hannah has been doing things wrong from the start, such as giving Maggie the ice cream before dinner. Anyone could have guessed that her parents do not want her eating dessert before dinner, that's a very common things with a lot of family's and it makes sense.
another thing is hiding the pouch in the garbage. does she not realize that it will be taken away!!!?! even if there aren't any garbage men in her home country where did she assume it went??! i think Hannah needs to start using a lot more common sense.

I disagree. She didn't really choose to giver her the ice cream, and what nanny wouldn't want to be cool and let the kid have ice cream without the parents knowing. With the pouch, she didn't have many options, it was worth a try.

I agree with your post. Moldova can’t be that different from America to give children dessert before dinner. With the pouch, I don’t think she knew it would get taken. I’m sure in Moldova, you had to take your own trash somewhere instead of the city doing it for you.

I agree that Hannah has been doing some stuff wrong put she is not used to this lifestyle and I think Lillian was being too hard on her when it was her first day in America. I think instead of yelling at Hannah about the ice-cream she should have simply explained to her that what she did was against the rules and Hannah would have understood and wouldn't do it again.

The main conflict of this book is that Hannah is working as a modern slave. Hannah thought that coming to America would help her live out her dream of becoming a doctor. The Russian family she is staying with makes her work sixteen hour days, won’t let her leave the house, won’t pay her and seem to have a lot of secrets. Hannah is all on her own stranded in a foreign land. She has no money, false documents and knows nobody. No matter how hard Hannah tries, nothing she does is ever good enough for Lillian.

I agree with your post. I also think that Lillian should let Hannah speak more English around the house since she won’t let her take classes or even leave the house to see other people and practice her English. I also agree that the hours Hannah works are too long and go unappreciated.

Yea they do seem to have alot of secrets. Hannah will most likely find out and when she does she should probably leave. there probably just saying that theyll pay her but never will and will keep her as a slave unless she escapes. maybe Maggie will help her get out of there.

I agree. She’s literally enslaved and the only one being kind to her is the father. It’s even worse that she is separated from her family and can’t help her granma.

I think the most important conflict in the book is that Hannah is treated very poorly by her new family and is treated almost as a slave. Hannah has been working long hard hours working late at night and getting up early the next morning. She has been working for a couple months and still has not received any pay for what she has done. She also has no freedom, she can’t leave the house to go anywhere, and she can’t even leave the house just to take out the trash. She came to America to do more than just Nanny and clean a house; she came to learn more English, which is hard when the only human interaction you get is with a family that wants you to only speak Russian. If I were Hannah I would keep asking for money and if I still didn’t receive any I would leave before things got worse.

I agree she should be aloud to leave the house and take English classes. they are pretty much treating her as a slave and that's kinda messed up. i think she should just flat out leave because of all the work and no pay. its also unfair that she cant really chill with anyone on the outside.

    2. I agree, but I don't think it's the entire house. The children are't cause any problem and neither is the father. It's just Lillian.

I agree with your post. Hannah had to go through a lot just to go to the Russian food store. Everyone talks about Hannah as if she is just a piece of trash. When Rena and Lillian were talking in the dining room, they were saying she could just get passed around. No one appreciates what Hannah is doing for them.

I think the main conflict of the book so far is between Hannah and Lillian. They have had problems from the start involving things such as money, the work, what to wear, debts, ect. Lillian refuses to give Hannah the money she was promised until she pays them back for the ticket and everything. she also changed it from 400 dollars a week to 400 dollars a month which is nothing. she can also careless about Hannah's blind grandmother and the money Hannah needs to help her. Lillian is basically slaving Hannah and probably does not care that that is extremely illegal.

I agree. I think Lillian only thinks about herself. Hannah is basically crying out for help and Lillian is just ignoring it. All Hannah cares about is getting money back home to get her grandmother’s surgery. And taking night classes isn’t asking a lot. She woks sixteen hour days cleaning their house and the least they could do is pay for some English classes.

I agree with your post. I think Lillian is extremely selfish and does not appreciate Hannah at all. She keeps accusing Hannah of doing things that she hasn't like being with Sergey. I think this is the main conflict in the book and I think Hannah needs to either convince Lillian to start paying her or leave and maybe even just hide in the neighbor, Collins, house and maybe they would help her and give her money for a plane ticket home.

The theme of this book is that you can’t trust people you don’t know. Hannah took a leap of faith with the lady that came to the market. She trusted that she would be taken care of, paid four hundred dollars a week, and would have a little freedom. That obviously wasn't the case. If she continues to stay in the mentally abusive home, there is no way that she will ever be able to live out her dream of becoming a doctor. I think its best if Hannah finds a way to leave before its too late.

I agree with your theme Hannah really had to put her faith in the woman at the market and it did not work out well. She should have made sure that the deal was serious and she should not have given her return plane ticket to the family when she got there because she was trusting them with that and now if she decides to go home she has no way to get there.

yea she should have been way more careful then she was she was probably pretty desperate so she didn't realize what could have happened. either way she should have just flat out left the house and went to the police. anyone with common sense would realize that the police, the ones who protect the public, would do the things that Lillian said they would.

I think the main idea or theme is this book is that things aren’t always as good as them seem. Hannah went to America with a lot of expectations with a big salary and she thought she would be able to go to school and someday become a doctor but this wasn’t the case. She went to America and has not made any money except for fifty dollars that was given to her. She works almost as a slave and is not allowed to leave the house or take classes to better her English. America did not turn out to be what Hannah imagined it as and she regrets her decision to go.

yea i also think that Hannah's expectations were way to high. she should have thought through the whole scenario a little more then she did. she didn't really think of the negatives just the benefits like money, classes, ect... the whole situation probably made her more wise.

The theme of this book is that you shouldn't trust strangers especially ones in other countries. Hannah thought she would be paid 400 dollars a week for being a nanny and could send money back to her home country for her family. but she ended up getting stuck with debt that she was never told, pretty much slave labor, bosses that sexually and physically harassed her, and little to know money at the end. Hnnah should have been a little more cautious in the first place. or left when she got the chance.
